Photons contain different amounts of energy, corresponding to different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. When the photons hit a photovoltaic cell, they are absorbed by layers of semiconductor material.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Whenever the photovoltaic cell absorbs enough sunlight, electrons are dislodged from the atoms.
