What is a photovoltaic module?

A photovoltaic module is the technical name for what is commonly known as a solar panel. This equipment is made up of photovoltaic cells connected together and whose predominant material is silicon.

It is used to capture solar energy, and its functionality is to convert solar radiation into direct electrical current (DC).

What are photovoltaic cells?

Photovoltaic cells are responsible for converting solar radiation into direct electrical current (DC).

Photovoltaic modules are produced by assemblies of photovoltaic cells connected in series. Manufacturers offer solutions with different quantities of cells. Currently, the most common are "Half-Cell" with 132 and 144 cells.

Quadrisol sells and regularly stocks several photovoltaic modules, the most common being "Half-Cell" with 144 cells.

The number of cells is an important factor when choosing a photovoltaic module. The greater the number of cells per module, the higher the yield, thus leading to a considerable increase in energy production.

How does a photovoltaic cell work?

A photovoltaic cell, commonly called a solar cell, is a non-mechanical device that directly converts sunlight (photons) into electrical energy (electrons).

Sunlight is made up of photons or solar energy particles. Photons contain different amounts of energy, corresponding to different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. When the photons hit a photovoltaic cell, they are absorbed by layers of semiconductor material.

Whenever the photovoltaic cell absorbs enough sunlight, electrons are dislodged from the atoms. The movement of the electrons, each carrying a negative charge, towards the positive layer of the cell creates a power differential between the layers, giving rise to a direct current

On what does the adoption of a photovoltaic system depend?

To start sizing a photovoltaic system, you have to take into account that a single photovoltaic module does not produce enough energy for the consumption of a home or business. You will have to opt for the installation of several connected photovoltaic modules. To calculate the number of modules required, it is advisable to carry out a study to determine the energy consumption profile of the installation, both in summer and winter.
